V2A vs V4A — How Stainless Steels Differ and Which to Choose
Choosing between V2A and V4A is one of the most common decisions when ordering stainless steel products. Both are chromium-nickel steels, but they differ in composition and corrosion resistance.
V2A — 1.4301 / AISI 304
The most popular stainless steel for general applications. It handles moisture and typical industrial environments well, is easy to machine and weld. It works where there is no constant exposure to chlorine and aggressive acids.
V4A — 1.4404 / AISI 316L
V4A contains an addition of molybdenum (approx. 2%), which significantly increases resistance to pitting corrosion — especially in the presence of chlorides (salt, pool water), acids, and aggressive chemicals. The "L" designation means low carbon content, beneficial for welding (lower risk of intercrystalline corrosion).
Which to Choose?
- V2A (304) — drainage and equipment in typical conditions, general industry, gastronomy without aggressive chemicals.
- V4A (316L) — pools and car washes (chlorine, salt), chemical and pharmaceutical industry, wet areas with intensive washing, coastal environment.
In Brief
If chlorine, salt, or acids are present — choose V4A. For other applications, V2A is usually sufficient and more cost-effective. If in doubt, select the material based on the specific medium and process.
